Saints make four changes
Saints make four changes
St Kilda has made four changes for Friday night’s preliminary final against Sydney and will be boosted by the return of key defenders Matt Maguire and Max Hudghton.

Brendon Goddard and Aaron Fiora are the Saints’ other inclusions for injured trio Justin Peckett (hamstring), Sam Fisher (foot stress fractures) and Aaron Hamill (calf). Matthew Ferguson has been dropped.

Goddard, named on a half back flank, returns after missing the qualifying final win over Adelaide with a hamstring strain.

A hamstring injury sustained in round 19 against Geelong kept Hudghton sidelined for five matches, while Maguire has recovered from a hip flexor strained during the round 21 match against Fremantle at Subiaco.

Jason Gram, Nick Stone and Mark McGough are the St Kilda emergencies.

Sydney has named an unchanged side with coach Paul Roos declaring veteran Paul Williams a certain starter.

The 32-year-old was rated only a 50/50 chance of playing early in the week after suffering a thigh injury but arrived in Melbourne on Thursday with the rest of the Swans’ team.

“He is fine, college t shirt designs, he trained for 40 minutes of the 50 minute (training) session last night so he will definitely play,,” Roos said of Williams, upon arrival in Melbourne in Thursday.

The Swans bought a 26 man squad down to Melbourne for the preliminary final with emergencies Nic Malceski, Andrew Schauble and Luke Vogels all travelling down with the team but Roos did not anticipate the Swans making any late changes to their team.

“We have bought down another four players but at this time of the year, it’s more a safety first thing because you never know what will happen.”

“Our reserves are not playing until Sunday in the Canberra league grand final so those (emergency) players can get themselves back and prepare for that game no problems.”

Swans’ form the best for two years

,
Swans’ form the best for two years
SYDNEY Swans coach Paul Roos says his side’s past month of football has been the best for a couple of years.

“We were in a winning position late in the game and it was a bit like the St Kilda match (in round 18),,” Roos said after the five-point loss to Geelong at ANZ Stadium.

“We have a young team out there and the footy we have played in the last month has probably been the best footy we have played in the last two years.

“We have played the best two sides in the competition over the past three weeks and we have lost one by a point and the other by five points.

“We had a genuine chance to win both of those games so the experience the younger guys are getting is invaluable.

“Our goal is to play as well as we can every week.”

Roos said he was hopeful that the remaining two games of the season against Collingwood and Brisbane would see the same level of commitment.

He also said the hot form of Geelong’s Gary Ablett wasn’t unexpected.

Kieren Jack,, Marty Mattner and Paul Bevan all tried to curb the brilliance of Ablett but none succeeded as the champion onballer gathered 44 possessions, eight clearances and booted a goal.

Ablett actually gathered eight more possessions than his three opponents put together.

Roos admitted there wasnt much he could do when the superstar was in that kind of form.

“We had three players on him throughout the night but when he is playing that well it is very hard to stop him,” Roos said.

“We probably dont have anyone with the size and strength other than Goodes but he is playing mainly forward.

“So,liverpool games 2011, we had three guys have a crack at him and they werent all that successful.”

Roos dismissed talk during the week that comments by Tim Watson about Ablett worrying about winning the Brownlow Medal would fire him up.

“At a press conference during the week I said he would get 50 possessions so I was only six short, custom print clothes,” Roos said.

“He is a super player and I didnt hear what Tim said but he is way off the mark.

“He doesnt need Tim Watson to fire him up. I mean he is favourite for the Brownlow, he is second or third in the coaches award so he has had a fantastic year and we are not the only ones he has destroyed.

“He is going to be an important player in the next couple of home and away games and in the finals. He is a great player.”

Roos also said Goodes was still learning his role as a permanent forward but his class was still on display.

Goodes finished the match with 21 possessions, 12 marks and two goals at centre half-forward.

“You know Goodes is a class player and he is taking a little while to adjust to that role as you would imagine,” Roos said.

“You saw periods of the game where he was fantastic and you saw periods of the game where he is still learning the role.”
Biglands has knee reconstruction
Adelaide ruckman Rhett Biglands last night had a second reconstruction of his left knee.

Crows chief medical officer Dr Andrew Potter said: “Surgery confirmed Rhetts anterior cruciate wasnt working as it should and required reconstruction. The surgery showed that,, as we suspected,fc barcelona kit 2011, the problem was not the result of one incident.”

Biglands first injured his knee in the 2006 preliminary final. He did not play in 2007 but resumed training before the end of last season and took part in all pre-season training before reporting a lack of stability in the knee in mid-January.

Coach Neil Craig said: “We are extremely disappointed for Rhett. The way he went about his first rehabilitation was exemplary and the Club will do all it can to help him through this latest setback.”

Greg Gallman, bundesliga bremen, who hurt his left knee at training on Thursday,, will continue to be monitored over the next few days.

Short jab costs Ling one match

,
Short jab costs Ling one match
Geelong has suffered a serious blow ahead of Sunday’s clash with Brisbane with the AFL Tribunal suspending deputy vice-captain Cameron Ling for one match after he was found guilty of striking St Kilda’s Nick Riewoldt.

Ling, bayern munchen soccer, one of the Cats best midfielders, manchester city home shirt, was due to play his 50th senior match for the club this week. The 22 year-old Cat pleaded not guilty to the report, laid by field umpire Colin Rowston, but the tribunal found his contact to Riewoldt’s abdominal area was “off the ball and unnecessary”.

The video footage of the incident was inconclusive,, but umpire Rowston said he was 30-35 metres away from the players, and that he had an uninterrupted view.

Ling was not Riewoldt’s direct opponent, but said he was attempting to block the young Saint with his body on behalf of Geelong defender Matthew Scarlett.

The umpire said Ling had use his “clenched right fist” to strike Riewoldt with “a short jab” during the second quarter of the game. The umpire said Riewoldt bent over after the contact either “because he was winded or in pain”.

Ling argued he had merely attempted to retard Riewoldt by swinging his right arm around his midriff.

“A light brush wouldn’t have stopped his progress at all,” he told the tribunal. “I just wanted to be in his way and allow Matty (Scarlett) to catch up.”

Riewoldt said Ling’s contact was nothing out of the ordinary,, and that he had only appealed for a free kick because his passage to the ball had been obstructed.

“It probably happens 20 times per game. My lead was blocked and my run on the ball has been impeded.”

Ling was suspended for one match last season for striking Collingwood captain Nathan Buckley. He was runner-up in the Cats best-and-fairest award last year in just his third season.

Young Hill inspired by Magpie skipper
Young Hill inspired by Magpie skipper
WESTERN Bulldogs youngster Tom Hill is using the story of Collingwood skipper Nick Maxwell to inspire him as he embarks on his own elite footy career.

A 200cm forward from Melbourne’s northern suburbs, Hill was taken by the Dogs with pick 89 in last year’s NAB AFL Draft.

In the midst of his first pre-season, Hill recently attended the AFL Players’ Association induction camp, which included an address from Maxwell.

“Nick gave us a great insight into what it takes to get to the highest level,” Hill said.

“He came off a rookie list and now he’s a premiership captain. I really took a lot away from what he said.”

Now 19,, Hill was eligible for the 2009 national draft but was overlooked.

He shrugged off his disappointment and signed a deal with expansion club Greater Western Sydney to play in its TAC Cup team during 2010.

However, he suffered a knee injury within a week of moving to Sydney.

“It was pretty interesting, to be honest,” Hill said. “I didn’t end up playing a full game. I only played the last half of the last game of the season.

“It was a funny year in that way. I just had to worry about rehab and getting my body right.”

Despite the injury,, Hill’s spirits lifted when he was contacted by Bulldogs recruiting manager Simon Dalrymple last June.

“That made it a little bit awkward up in Sydney, but I just had to go about my business up there and not worry too much about it,” he said.

“When the draft came around I was told that I’d be taken with pick 88 or 89, so I wasn’t too nervous going into it.

“The year ended up going really quickly. It felt like one minute I was in Sydney living with a host family and the next I was back with mum and dad in Melbourne and part of a new club.

“It worked out really well in the end.”

Having hardly made it onto the field in 2010,cheap premier league football shirts, Hill has worked hard on his fitness during pre-season and his knee has handled the workload without any further problems arising.

“I’ve been putting a lot of work into my leg strength and my core stability,,” he added. “I’ve been really focussed on my rehab after the sessions and making sure I do all the icing and that sort of thing.”

Hill has set modest goals for himself in 2011.

“I think most of the blokes start in the Williamstown reserves and then try and make your way into the Willy senior side,” he said.

“My aim is really to make a good start there. I want to try and hold a spot in the Williamstown seniors for the year, team manila shirt, but other than that I’m not thinking too far ahead.

“I just need to keep developing as a player.”

‘Unpredictability’ a plus for Pies
‘Unpredictability’ a plus for Pies
CTV > Guy McKenna’s Thursday press conference

MAGPIE RADIO > Dane Swan and Ryan Cook on The Squawk

READ > Travis Cloke accepts one-match suspension

COLLINGWOOD assistant coach Guy McKenna has said the teams injury predicament going into this weeks game against the Bulldogs makes them “unpredictable”.

The Pies will be without ruckman Josh Fraser due to a knee injury as well as forward Leon Davis who is out with an ankle complaint.

The team may also be missing club stalwart Anthony Rocca who is struggling to recover from an ankle injury and hasnt played since round nine.

“[We're] going to go in with a few changes due to injuries so we become a little bit unpredictable. I dont think the way we play will [change] but the personnel changes things. Wed see that as an advantage, liverpool football kits,” he said.

“You dont go in with a stock standard side and the Doggies have been pretty solid. I think they had 16 blokes that have played every game so far this season. At this stage of the year its almost unheard of, so theyre settled, you get a good read of them.”

McKenna admitted that last weeks loss to the Blues was a form of wake-up call for the club.

“Its not that you get comfortable, its that maybe you werent crossing your t’s and dotting your i’s. You were just performing to maybe 80 or 85 per cent and in this competition you get found out no matter who you play.

“Carlton certainly found us out and I think there was just a realignment with the players to get their heads back on their shoulders and say; yes we were a little bit soft in some areas. We need to make sure that we follow through with what the coaches are expecting.”

Former Magpie great and media commentator Tony Shaw was scathing this week for how Collingwood head coach Mick Malthouse used his nephew Heath Shaw in the loss to Carlton.

But McKenna denied that playmaker Shaw, who has had an outstanding season, would be approaching this weekends game any differently.

“Heath will just get involved in the way we expect him to get involved and if hes up,, hes up, and if hes down, hes down,,” he said.

“Hes like any other player that plays through the midfield. They get tagged and sat on their backside and go through a flat spot and come out the other end a better player.

“Im sure Heaths not far away from that and Im sure hes been in some good form and bad form, which is no different to anyone that gets tagged.”

However, spurs new kit, McKenna did admit that this weekends tussle with the top-three side is “crucial”.

“Every games a special game because love them or like them everyone comes out to beat Collingwood,” he said.

“Its great for us because we get that type of pressure, intensity, big crowds,, all that sort of stuff, so behind all that it actually helps us. But to maintain that for a whole season, thats tough.. we have to manage that.. so this game becomes pretty crucial.”

Thomas hails ‘Clayton’s loss’
Thomas hails ‘Clayton’s loss’
St Kilda coach Grant Thomas believes his team will gain enormous benefit out of its lucky escape against bottom-placed Essendon at the MCG with the Saints’ boss almost treating the victory as a “Clayton’s loss.”

While Thomas was delighted his side was able to find a way to win a game it looked set to lose nearly all day – with the Bombers having led from the start of the game until the 11 minute mark of the final term – he said the close shave would also give his players added motivation for future weeks.

Thomas admitted he drove home to his players after the game what the consequences would have been for the club had they lost to an Essendon side that has now equalled the worst losing run in its history – 14 successive defeats.

“I asked the players after the game to contemplate the consequences if we didnt finish in front – the pain and the hurt and you can drop your self-esteem quickly if you don’t get over the line in those games.”

Continuing “the loss we had to have without having a loss” theme, Thomas said the shock of almost being beaten by the favourites for this year’s wooden spoon should ensure no similar lapses in coming weeks.

“In some ways it gives the players the chance to regroup and understand the importance of (maintaining our) concentration, man united away kit, discipline and effort.”

“It’s good for our club to go through that.”

“If we had been better through parts of the game and won by four of five goals, there would have been a bit of falseness to that.”

But while Thomas is hoping the lucky escape against the Bombers will ensure his team remains switched-on for the rest of the season,, he was full of praise for the way they were able to fashion a win despite trailing nearly all game.

“I just think that was the sort of game that St Kilda has lost for a long time,” he said.

“But great credit to our group to rally and win the last half and finish with our noses in front and we produced a fair bit of grit in the end.”

Thomas paid special tribute to the efforts of Nick Riewoldt and Robert Harvey,, who were the only Saints to perform at their best for all four quarters.

Riewoldt kicked two crucial goals from set shots in the final term while 34-year-old Harvey was inspirational, tottenham hotspur clothes, despite copping a heavy blow to the face from Adam McPhee early in the game which saw the Essendon defender reported.

Thomas said Harvey was a fantastic role model for the club’s younger players in the way he just keeps forging on, regardless of the circumstances.

“You don’t want to lose a player of his ability but we got told pretty quickly that he had just had his nose re-arranged and was able to continue to play,,” Thomas said of Harvey’s clash with McPhee.

“You have got to be resilient to play for 18 years and go through what he has gone through (during his career) and he is a great role model for our playing group and an ornament to the game in the way he goes about it.”
